Mixed bag.

Pros:Cooks/Boils things very quickly.It does run cool and is easy to clean.Not outrageously priced.A fantastic hot, fast, heat.Cons:I bought this based on claims induction cookers compare to gas. NOT SO, this unit at least. Not even close. Sure, I hate waiting for pots to heat up. But I also want to do things like slow cook, hold items at temp for serving, etc. So, what's wrong with the picture?It will scorch, even on lowest power and 140F. You can't hold anything for a period of time without regular stirring, except water.It will auto-shutoff, even if you do not have the timer set. Nothing cooks for more than 170 minutes, period.All power settings below 1800W are "pulsed".Overall:I bought this because I miss gas and it is not available in my new home. I wanted to do slow cooking, mostly. Set the pot at 180, low, and let it go. Alas, it can't be done. I'd even go so far and turn to a double boiler, but no, auto-shutoff put a solid end to that idea.I think accurate temp hold is be a rather important detail in the Commercial environment. I also don't know any commercial outfit wanting to fiddle with their equipment as much as this unit demands.I really WANT this thing to work. It just isn't all that it should be.

FANTASTIC

I have used this for 3 months now, installed a 220v outlet in my kitchen to get the extra power that 3000w affords. It makes a HUGE difference. This is a well made unit for a VERY reasonable price and works exactly like professional induction cooktops from CookTek etc at a fraction of the price. The ONLY thing I don't love about it is the touch glass controls which require multiple presses to get the setting you want. A good old fashioned dial is the best control. However that doesn't take a star off of this workhorse that literally boils water in 10 seconds. This is a godsend for boiling water for pasta (which takes ages on a gas or electric stove), and for deep frying to keep the oil perfectly hot even as you add more food. When purchasing pans for this unit, make sure to bring a small magnet with you to test the bottom of the pan for ferromagnetic compatibility. I have purchased SEVERAL pans from local stores that SAID they were stainless steel, but did not work at all with this unit. Iron fry pans always work well, though.

Very powerfull

I have the Max Burton 1800 watt unit and is the only thing I use, I have had it for 3 years now with not one issue. I thought I would upgrade to the 3000 watt unit and I did, the unit is very solid, gets things hot and boils large amounts of water like you would not believe, but the display was not clear as the picture shows, but when I complained to the company at that time they were prompt in their response and offered on with a good display (that was not a deal breaker for me) actually their customer support was what anyone would wish for.One of the reasons I returned it is what another reviewer mentioned and that is 1800 watt setting and below is pulse and I believe it is 1800 watt hot per pulse, and the reason I say that is when comparing boiling water in equal size pans and amounts of water on the 1800 watt unit and the 3000 watt unit at low temps the smaller unit does not cause nearly the boil the large one causes.The other reason which for me was the deal breaker was the fact that the units heating area was very small, if you use a 12in skillet and heat water in it you will see a 5 to 5.5in ring that produces the heat and that is a ring that is no more than 1" wide, it is not even a solid circle of a heating area, that to me is a flaw I could not deal with, I could have dealt with the pulse issue if the heating area was like 10" and solid, I would have not worried about it then. The current configuration is a great one for many I am sure but for controlled/even cooking I don't believe this works well.

Unbelievably Quick, Loud Squeal (Update 5-28-11 USE IRON Skillets NO Squel!)

Received this last week and it works extremely well except for a loud high pitched squeal. I have tried various cookware (induction ready) and so far for the PRICE have found Winco's line of induction ware the best to use.I have not used cast iron or carbon steel. Will be checking that over the next few days.Update 5-28-11We received a second unit and used it for a Pasta station last night. Tried cast iron skillet - no noticeable squeal.Event was a huge success and everyone commented on how fresh, well prepared and quick, meals got to them. Used Linguini and Penne with over 15 toppings. Average cooking time on previously sauteed or cooked food (all was cold)was 2 minutes done in front of clients. THEY LOVE THE SHOW!Strongly suggest Winco RSK-6 1/2" or RSK-8" Iron Skillets that will eliminate the squeal. You do not want anything bigger than that for individual meals. Portions are more controllable, skillet weighs less and takes up less room on table. If you don't mind the high pitched squeal (most people over 50 can't hear it) then use the Winco SSFP-8NS stainless steel 8" which is lighter than the Iron Skillets. Both are available from many places including Tigerchef.com.If you use a non-iron skillet that is induction ready, the hotter the skillet the less noise it makes.We plan on buying at last 2 more. They are portable, well made and easily adjustable. Use 2 skillets per stove top so that as you are preparing or cooking, the machine does not shut off, otherwise the machine will beep if you lift the skillet and then turn off automatically. I may be disconnecting the beeper.So far this is a great product, well made and well laid out.

Changes the way you cook

I have had this item for a few weeks now, and it has performed well. It not only lets you select the power in watts for heating things up, but it will also let you select the temperature. Neither the watts or the temperature are infinitely adjustable, but there are enough choices to make it usable. For instance in temp mode you can select between 180 or 210 degrees, basically boiling or not. It will go all the way down to 140. The wattage goes all the way up to 1800 for fast heating. The wattage and temperature modes are independent of each other. Change to power and set the wattage, it will pump out that many watts continuously. Change to temperature and it will maintain the temperature you set (I assume on the bottom of the pot). As I'm sure most know you have to have pots and pans that are magnetic to make it work, and the disk they sell is no alternative if you want to boil water, or heat things up alot. My allclad works great as do other pots I have. My Cuisinart pots don't, so take a magnet to find out. The stronger the magnet attracts the better the pot or pan will work (meaning the less energy will be used to heat the pot). I found that at its highest setting it will boil a quart of water from 64 degrees in less than 4 minutes.UPDATEI've had this unit for over a month now, and the more I use it the more I like it. Its nice having the temperature setting so I can heat soup or chili without worrying about it boiling over if I get busy. I find it less useful with large frying pans for cooking ground beef as it doesn't have a very large heating area. I'm using allclad pans so I assume its not the cookware. Of course when you compare 1800 watts to a gas burner on my range, the electric comes up short on power. What can you expect from a 110 outlet. It boils water in a 2 qt pot very fast, so I have to keep my eyes on it. I made 12 quarts of chili on it last week, and never burnt anything to the bottom of the pot by using the 180 degree setting. It was on the burner for 3 hours. Simply amazing.

Well worth it.

I still very happy after weekly use for almost six months. With rapid response and easy adjustment, I've found it versatile and reliable. I move it frequently and it travels well, but adjustable feet would be nice as many tables aren't flat or level. In the kitchen it's been a workhorse, stable and solid, it has shown little of the squealing mentioned by others. Even a slightly rounded-bottom is a bummer, though, but good cookware with a flat bottom is well worth it. Small pans or large pots both work well, as cooktop has no rim, allowing overhang. I don't like that it shuts itself off after a couple of hours, so you have to remember to turn it back on if you're cooking an all-day recipe. When done, it cools quickly (and so can be put away) and it's easy to keep clean. Nice. Addendum: After two years, still working great.

Weston clone; not worth the money

I wanted a french fry cutter, but the plastic ones looked like they would not last very long. I was initially going to buy the Weston model, but saw the LEM model. It's the same as the Weston, but it comes with two cutters (3/8 and ½) rather than just one as the Weston does. I wanted both sizes, and this model was much less expensive than the Weston once the second cutter was added.It was impressive in terms of weight. This is all metal, with the plastic parts limited to the push plate (the plate that holds the potato in place). That's good, but only if the parts are properly machined. In this case, it's made very poorly. Parts do not fit together well at all. At best, that makes it difficult to use. At worst, as in my case, it makes it non-functional.Even before I had a chance to use it, the back frame snapped. It probably had a weak joint during manufacturing, and it snapped as easily as a twig when I was assembling it.On the plus side, the Lem customer service was very nice. I called them, and after just a couple of minutes of information exchange, they said a replacement frame would be sent to me. The rep also stated that they were getting a number of calls about the frame, so mine was not an isolated incidence.I was able to work around the frame issue and got it assembled. It does not work well. Yes, it's better than a plastic potato cutter, but not by much. The blades are not very sharp, and require a significant amount of force to get a potato through. Forget about sweet potatoes - this will barely deal with dense white potatoes.I ended up returning it since it does not come close to being worth the price charged. A big thank-you to J&R Electronics, as they made the return process quick and easy.I'm giving it two stars rather than one, since it has the potential to be a decent operating machine if you:1. Bolt it to a table. The suction cup feet flex too much to offer a stable platform.2. Get out a file and tap and die set, and re-machine the parts that were poorly made in the factory. Replace weak fasteners with better ones.If you're not willing to do the above, don't bother with this.

Didn't make French Fry cutting easy for me....

The first unit came and was so mistreated in shipping that the frame was broken, heavy cast aluminum, due to thin and paltry packaging from factory, Amazon sent me a second one fast as lightning and once again the styrfoam was destroyed but the unit was intact. Using it is another matter, it takes enormous strength to operate, and it seems like the blades aren't even sharp, the suction cup option is a joke, and it pulled the first 4 screws loose that I mounted it with. Not a happy purchase, it didn't help in my kitchen, it takes a lot more effort than I want to give, not just push the handle down as advertised.

Defective electrical parts.

The main on off switch stopped working after 6 months. They sent me a replacement part and I installed it myself.At 11 months smoke came out of the fuse holder with a strong smell of burning plastic.I called them and they said I would have to send it back to them and I would have to pay for shipping.They would not send me the part.I am an electrician so I decided to fix it myself. When I opened it up I found that the fuse holder was wired to the neutral wire instead of the hot wire. The fuse holder had a rating of 10 amps on it.The fuse inside it is 20 amps. The unit uses 15 amps.This is why it burned up.It was overloaded.This is a violation and unsafe.No UL label.

Early failure

I have been using this machine for about 5 weeks and the On-Off switch burned out already. Thing that really ticks me off is there was no parts list or any information where to buy parts included with this machine X(.

Safety Issues ON OFF Switch

This product has safety issues. The switch will not handle the current load to run the machine. It appears that it has no safey review by Consumers. I purchased my unit for my Grandaughter's gymnastics team about a year ago. The first failure was after about 12 hrs use. The unit stopped and we needed to cook our dogs in a pot as the machine smelled of burnt wiring. We called the service tech and he sent a switch under warrenty but charged $20 for shipping and handling. I am an electrical engineer, so I installed new switch, noting that switch was under rated "current wise" and would most likely burn out again. I ordered two new switches for $40. I called the service tech "Carlos" and he said go to Radio Shack and find a heavier switch that will work. The team is afraid to use the unit as it has failed both times we used it at events. Maybe "DAH" someone should look at the problem and offer a safe switch as a recall, and upgrade the unit. This product needs safety review and upgraded switch. I am aware that others have had the same experience. What a shame! Lets do what is right! Great machine but not reliable!

3 star could easily be a 5 star.

I've only used it three or four times, but it's worked well thus far. I set the elements to between 2 and 2.5 and hotdogs cook nice and evenly. It's a quiet unit, which is nice given there can be a lot of noise in the kitchen or retail area. It really does strike me as a generally well made product.I have a single complaint however. I needed to drill additional holes into the shield to install it as the existing ones didn't line up.

This cooker has a shield on the back that prevents any juices from splattering on the wall behind as well as funneling the smell/flavor forward to help with hotdog sales! Excellent quality for the price!

Worked for 3 months.

The Hotdog roller lasted three months and the front power switch failed. We will be ordering a different brand. Very disappointed.

Outstanding... Quality, Ease, and Delicious Hot Dogs!

Ordered this for a birthday party - used it for the Super Bowl as well - it's simple, easy to use and clean, of top quality, and it's a hot dog roller! Just plain fun to have around. You can cook up hot dogs, brats, sausages, or whatever - and the adjustable heat settings let you do so in anywhere from 3-4 minutes to 3-4 hours - quite versatile. A lot folks asked, "so did you rent that somewhere" and of course the answer was "no, got it on Amazon for under a hundred bucks" - and now it's the primary way I plan to cook hot dogs - delicious. The Pigeon would love it.

HOT DOG!

We LOVE our hot dog roller, it can cook 18 hot dogs at a time and keep them warm with variable temperature controls. The kids love it, the adults love it, it's great!

Damaged Dawg

While the BigDawg is operating fine, the machine arrived damaged. There was no packaging problem, so I have to assume it was packed as a damaged item; one side of the machine is crushed in. As I needed the cooker immediately for a party, I decided to keep. It seems to work fine though I would recommend a guard be purchased if available as quite a bit of grease is splattered.

The hot dog roller I received was USED and DIRTY.

This product is not advertised as used or refurbished, so I expected to receive a brand new, unused, clean item. The hot dog roller I received was packaged as a new item, with a sheet of (unsealed) plastic wrapped around it. As I reached in the box to pull it out, one of my hands went under the plastic sheet and stuck to the appliance. After I pulled off the plastic sheet and looked closely at the roller, I could see residue (which I am guessing was food residue/grease) and crumbs! I took pictures and have submitted them to Amazon, but do not see how to upload them here with my review. I have uploaded them as additional customer images to the product description. The top of the roller also had several obvious scratches on it. I am disappointed and disgusted. BUYER BEWARE!

Disappointed!

So disappointed in this product. It was received, removed from the box and the first time I went to use it, the rollers started, then abruptly stopped working. Tried several more times but still rollers didn't move. Maybe I got a lemon...not sure...but was planning to use for Super Bowl party and now I am left having to ship back a 31 pound lemon of a machine. Love the idea of this product but not if it doesn't work out of the box.
